Being out at sea can be an incredibly stress-inducing environment. Of course, you are away from your family and friends, but you’re also dealing with the constant motion of the vessel, the potential for bad weather, and the pressure of your work responsibilities. It’s no wonder that so many seafarers suffer from stress-related problems like anxiety and depression.

However, there are some things you can do to help manage your stress onboard. In this short course, we will learn all about this.

Home should be a place you can relax and get away from daily life stressors. But for many people at home, the pressure builds, making anxiety levels soar. Although it’s consistently voted top of the list as the thing that makes us feel stressed out, money is actually a fairly minor cause of actual stress.

What is more likely to cause a meltdown is having too much to do in too little time. It is known that stress and anxiety can cause severe mood disorders, and physical symptoms and weaken people’s ability to cope with everyday situations. This course will give you a brief insight into reducing stress when you are home.

Students will be introduced to decision-making strategies and their application to fast and slow emergencies. On completion, a student should be able to recognise behaviours in themselves and others that either help or hinder their decisions in emergencies. Emergencies themselves will be introduced by the nature as 'fast and slow'. Through traditional maritime training, many students will be familiar with a fast emergency, though it is unlikely they have received training and developed strategies for a slow emergency. This course provides these tools.

The crew on board ships can be seriously injured (sometimes with casualties) when working with workshop tools and machines if they do not follow safety rules. The Workshop Safety course shows the learner how to safely select, use, maintain and store tools and also to work with workshop machines on board ships. Moreover, this course identifies the correct PPE to be worn in workshops and recommends common safety rules for the crew who work in workshops.

In a ship workshop, various tools, spares, equipment and machines are necessary for different works and operations. If crew members do not have the knowledge of how to work safely in workshops, the person doing the work may injure himself or others. Workshop tools and machines should be used, maintained and stored properly, particularly the stationary machines that are often fixed on the tables or stand footings. This training course identifies some hazards related to operations with welding machines, drilling machines, and lath machines in workshops and followingly proposes some safety guides.

Furthermore, the Workshop Safety course discusses how personnel on board ships should work safely within the workshops. More in detail, this course covers: an introduction to the ship workshops, common works in workshops and hazards in workshops, workshop safety rules, and good housekeeping for workshops.

Engineers have tackled problems with machinery more by trial and error than by collective experience. A good understanding of the application, of the theory for practical troubleshooting, is invaluable and ensures they can come to the correct conclusion quickly and decisively. Diesel engines provide propulsion power and serve as prime movers for Generators on most ships. So a complete understanding of the processes, how to interpret parameters, Indicator cards and correct operations is an essential tool for any Engineer. In this course, we will learn in-depth about the combustion process, VIT, turbocharging, Indicator cards and lubrication system. The emphasis is always on the practical application of these to operations, fault finding, determining the cause and a resolution.
